とある山村に住む男ヤモメの田吾作は、東京からやってきた町子という女が山中で自殺しようとするのをやめさせた。彼女は母の病気のせいで借金を作ってしまったと事情を語り、この村でなにもかも忘れて田吾作と一緒に住みたいと言う。思わぬ展開に浮かれる田吾作だが、じつは町子は村の駐在の権太にも結婚をほのめかし…。
